 We're Getting Married!

June 28, 2013        11:00am        Belle Mer        Newport, RI

Our Story

I remember seeing Joyce on Friday nights at our Christian fellowship on Brown’s campus. Somehow, we always ended up talking at the end of the night and I began to notice how pretty and easy to talk to she was. Unfortunately, she went away to Spain to study abroad for the spring semester. When she returned from her semester abroad in Barcelona, I began to ask Joyce to hang out, with our first “date” being a romantic walk to CVS in search of an umbrella (yes, it worked!). After hanging out a couple of times, we talked about our feelings and about pursuing a relationship: I was both surprised and ecstatic to find out that she somehow liked me too!

We became official on May 1st, 2009, and became long distance two weeks later as I went away for the summer and Joyce graduated from RISD. We were long distance for the next 3 years of our relationship--I missed her so much--until I finally graduated from Brown and moved up to Boston this year. I proposed a month and a half after moving to Boston.

I look back at our relationship and am so thankful and amazed at our growth throughout the years. I’ve gotten to study Joyce and learn so much about her. I can’t wait to learn more about Joyce and grow more in love with her with every passing year!

Gary and I met at a pizza party on campus in the fall of 2009. I noticed him right away because he was quite attractive :)! I had a secret crush on him from that moment but I was too scared to admit it. I wasn’t even looking for a relationship (I was about to graduate!), and I thought there was no way a freshman would be interested in a senior. I was also slightly weirded out that he was younger than me... :p. I spent a good chunk of that fall semester trying to avoid him.

I then spent spring semester studying abroad in Spain and returned with 2 months to spare before graduation. I remember being pleasantly surprised when Gary called me the afternoon I arrived back in America. We started hanging out here and there, but it was difficult to hang out with someone I had a crush on! I decided to express my feelings in hopes of getting them off my chest so that I could move on with my soon to be post-college life. What I did not expect was to find out that Gary had had a crush on me all year long as well - he just thought there was no way I would ever be interested in him!

We began dating 2 weeks before I graduated and moved to Boston. 3 good yet testing years of long distance ensued before Gary himself graduated and moved to Boston. And the rest is History!

Our Recommendations

Please note that room availability may open up closer to the summer, as people begin to release their room blocks. In addition to the popular downtown Newport area, we recommend looking for lodging in other areas of Aquidneck Island, such as Middletown. Middletown is not very scenic, but it is more economical, and less than a 10 minute drive away. Another area to consider is Jamestown, in nearby Conanicut Island.

A city by the sea...

“Newport is today, a city synonymous with the sea. Home to sailing’s most prestigious race for decades, the America’s Cup, life on the water is part of Newport’s pedigree. Perched on the southernmost tip of Aquidneck Island, the country’s wealthiest families flocked here during the Gilded Age to build their summer “cottages” at the ocean’s edge; the same bluebloods that turned “summer” into a verb. Dubbed America’s First Resort, this island community swells to more than 100,000 during the warmer months, all here to take in historic and cultural sights, year-round events, hundreds of diverse shops and eateries, classic New England charm and priceless factory-installed views.”

Magnifique Vieux-Québec!

When it came to picking our honeymoon destination, we wanted to go somewhere that was not too far, not too expensive, and had a lot of culture (and some nature too!). Québec City was the perfect choice! We will be spending a week in Old Québec, the crown jewel of French Canada, and a UNESCO world heritage site. We can’t wait to experience a city so rich in history and so full of European charm (all without the crazy prices and overwhelming tourist crowds!). We would be so glad if you could help make our honeymoon a wonderful one!
